Painting Historic Landscapes
Taught by: Lisa Curry Mair
Workshop Fee: $280.00
Using the mid-19th century theories of Rufus Porter, students will learn the basic ideas of painting a view. Capturing the beauty of a place through the expression of a painting is a wonderful experience. The Sanborn Mills Farm venue will provide inspiration for each to create their own “folk” interpretation of the buildings, animals, gardens and history of the farm. There will be a combination of exploring scenes outdoors and reviewing Porter’s (and other artists’ works) in the studio as ideas are developed. Some may prefer to use a provided template if they are not comfortable with drawing their own. Originality is encouraged and Lisa Curry Mair has the teaching experience to help students bring that out. A variety of transfer techniques will be demonstrated, bringing the sometimes-overwhelming task of getting your idea onto the canvas down to a fun and simple procedure. It’s always exciting to see where the class will go. Different paths always create beautiful, unique pieces. Each student will be provided a 39” x 27” prepared canvas to create a finished 3’ x 2’ piece which can be stretched and framed or directions will be given for turning your work into a durable floorcloth if you so choose. Acrylic paints and basic brushes will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring their own favorite painting tools, if they have them.
Skills and Techniques:
find your own “folk” style
explore the farm to discover what makes you stop and look
develop a simple sketch of your scene which will tell a story
learn the basics of landscape composition
learn the value of painting freely and making your piece “your own”
Please note: Painting experience is NOT needed for this workshop. Everyone is welcome. The goal is to have fun and learn; to create something new and exciting.
Materials Fee: $180 per person paid directly to the instructor. Fee covers your own mini mural- a prepared piece of cotton canvas which has a somewhat aged plaster/paint finish to accept paint beautifully. This piece, when finished, can be framed, hung or turned into a floorcloth (instructions included) as a 3’ x 2’ work. You’ll also get enough acrylic (water-based) paint for the entire project, brushes, transfer paper, templates and a reusable paint palette box.
Special Tools or Equipment: Students should bring their favorite brushes if they have them, a sketchbook and pencil, white plastic eraser, an empty 2 cup plastic margarine container for holding water and a hair dryer. Wear clothes suitable for playing with paint!
