Introduction to Woodworking for Women: The Charcuterie Board
Taught by: Lucas Fowler
Workshop Fee: $350.00
In this workshop, students can expect to get an introduction to the basic techniques for woodworking. This workshop will be geared towards the beginner woodworker who has little or no previous experience.
Students will complete a small charcuterie board over the course of two days. Although the general design will remain focused to ensure completion of the project, students will have multiple opportunities to adapt the design to suit their own unique artistic style.
The use of both power tools and hand tools will be covered.
The goal will be to understand the proper and safe use of various power tools in an effort to help the students use these tools in the future with confidence.
The care and use of various hand tools, both antique and modern, western and Japanese, will also be covered. Using hand tools will allow the student to gain a greater understanding of the physical characteristics of wood. They are also a great way to connect with the history of woodworking that goes back centuries and spans the entire globe.
Students will begin using a chop saw and a table saw to rough out the pieces for the charcuterie board. They will then use the table saw again to create the basic joinery for the piece.
Students will then embrace their artistic side as they create a unique profile for the legs of the board. We will then rough out the shape of the legs.
At this point, the students will switch to using hand tools. We will use a hand plane to surface all of the pieces. A gouge, a chamfer plane, and a chisel will all be used to continue finishing the piece.
The students will then assemble and glue their pieces and apply a finish to preserve their unique work.
