Keeping History Above Water - AHSNH Annual Meeting

Learn about climate change’s impact on older buildings and collections, and hear how Strawbery Banke is responding and adapting to these threats, at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Historical Societies of New Hampshire on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 10 a.m. by Zoom.

Rodney Rowland, Director of Facilities and Environmental Sustainability at Strawbery Banke Museum will present Keeping History Above Water by Zoom and answer questions following his presentation.

After joining with the City of Portsmouth's Local Advisory Committee in 2013, Strawbery Banke found that its site was among the most vulnerable in the city. With 37 historic houses at risk and already showing signs of impact and deterioration, the museum has been developing mitigation techniques and solutions to battle not only storm surge but groundwater and rising humidity levels in the structures.

In 2016, the Preservation Alliance included coastal properties in its Seven to Save list to drawing attention to properties such as the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion and other buildings, landscapes and Native American archaeological sites on the coast identified as endangered by a coastal risk and hazards commission. The commission said the grounds and part of the mapping are exposed to sea-level rise and storm surge and has been identified by the state as a priority for a detailed vulnerability analysis.
