Join the N.H. Preservation Alliance and the Currier Museum of Art, the endangered landmark’s new owner, for a special behind-the-scenes tour of this Victorian gem. Andrew Spahr, the Currier’s Director of Curatorial Affairs, preservation consultant Elizabeth Durfee Hengen, and Principal/Project Manager Brian Gehris of Milestone Engineering & Construction will serve as our tour guides.

Hear about the Currier’s plans for the building’s restoration and re-use for events, office space, and classroom space for their expanding programs. Enjoy seeing the original stained glass, carved wood, and wallpaper in what many consider one of the finest late-19th--century domestic interiors in the state.

The Chandler House is one of a pair of houses on large lots built by Moody Currier and Byron Chandler. Currier’s home made way for the Currier Museum and the Chandler House was sold to the Diocese of Manchester as the bishop’s residence, and it later served as a convent. By 2015, the large residence was no longer in use and the Diocese proposed demolition to create a parking lot for the adjacent parish church. The Preservation Alliance named the house to its Seven to Save list that fall.

Six years later, with growing preservation support led by a vibrant ad-hoc group, the Currier acquired the landmark and has launched a preservation project campaign to meet its needs and contribute to the stewardship and vitality of its neighborhood.
