Old barns are iconic around the New Hampshire countryside, and they are a link to the past and the hard work involved in building these structures and tilling the land. This session will follow the evolution of barns from the early English style, Yankee design, and gambrel, to the modern pole barns. As agricultural practices have changed over the years, barn design has been modified to adopt the new technology.
John C. Porter grew up on a dairy farm in Lebanon, New Hampshire and is co-author of the book, Preserving Old Barns, and he will discuss the history of old barns.
Arron Sturgis, of Preservation Timber Framing, Inc., of Berwick, Maine, is a highly respected old barn contractor and edited the structural preservation section of the barn book. Arron will discuss some of the basic architectural features of old barns, and he will give practical advice on the preservation and maintenance of these old structures.
