Expo on the Road | New England Porches: History and Preservation

The porch, whether simple or grand, has long evoked feelings of welcome, comfort and nostalgia. Thomas D. Visser, director of the graduate Historic Preservation Program in the Department of History at the University of Vermont, will provide a framework for identifying many types of historic porches in New England. He will share his research on the history and cultural traditions associated with porches and will discuss proactive strategies for porch maintenance, repair and restoration.

Thomas D. Visser is the director of the graduate Historic Preservation Program in the Department of History at the University of Vermont.  He has taught courses at UVM since 1985 on topics such as historic preservation planning and policy, researching historic buildings, architectural conservation, and history of American building technology.
