Caring for an old barn takes knowledge, skill, and commitment. Ian Blackman, a barn preservation contractor, has years of experience working with barn owners to care for and restore their historic structures. In this program, he will focus on the different styles and periods of barns in New England and outline the problems that are specific to each. Then he will discuss the step-by-step process of evaluating a barn’s features and overall condition in order to develop a rehabilitation plan with a phased approach to make the repairs more economically feasible.
Ian established Ian Blackman LLC Preservation & Restoration in 2003 and has been a champion of barn preservation ever since. Prior to starting his business, Ian was a preservation carpenter at Canterbury Shaker Village. He is a graduate of the furniture-making program at North Bennet Street School in Boston, and an active board member of the Preservation Alliance. He enjoys leading workshops and on-site tours that help people understand and care for historic barns, fostering greater appreciation for these valued elements of our historic past
