SOLD OUT!
Join us for a very special event with garden designer Bill Noble and owner Colin Cabot as they tour a small group through the incredible gardens of Sanborn Mills Farm in Loudon. Colin and Paula Cabot have been developing the expansive landscape of this 19th century farmstead since they purchased the 340 acre property in 1996. Renowned garden design expert Bill Noble of Norwich, Vermont, has been working with the Cabots on the design and plant choices of the gardens since 2016.
The tour will start in the Sanborn Barn Kitchen Garden where Colin and Paula grow a large variety of fresh herbs and vegetables to be used in the farm kitchen. Centered around a granite water fountain, this garden of raised beds includes everything from the ubiquitous beans, lettuce and peas, to old-world plants like lovage, sorrel and artichoke. We’ll then climb the stone steps to the hillside garden passing extensive stonework and water features along the way. The terraced formal gardens overlooking the farmhouse offer an amazing variety of perennials, shrubs, alpine plants, bulbs, climbing roses and a Katsura tree as the center piece. And not to be missed, we’ll stroll across the lane to explore the Stream Garden nestled under the canopy of towering oaks, adjacent to the sawmill’s spillway. This shade garden is currently under construction and being planted with wild flowers, ferns, marsh marigolds, and other woodland and shade-loving plants. Whether you are an avid gardener, or just appreciate the colors and textures of a garden landscape, you will not want to miss this tour!
We’re excited to offer this special event in partnership with Sanborn Mills Farm as our first in-person program of our ongoing Expo on the Road series!

Sanborn Mills Farm is a working farm with a mission to sustain and teach traditional farming and craft skills while stewarding its agricultural landscape for social, environmental, and economic benefits. A century and more ago, Sanborn Mills Farm was a bustling, thriving center of agricultural activities that supported an extended family and served the community. Today the farm has gathered a group of instructors, farmers, craftspeople, and historians dedicated to teaching the traditional skills that were commonplace then. We provide opportunities for people to learn old-fashioned ways and explore how they can be integrated into modern life. We believe that these skills and a vital connection to the land continue to be important and relevant. To learn more about Sanborn Mills Farm, visit https://www.sanbornmills.org/.
