Movies (and reading material) for those snowy nights

In the new animated movie Sing, the lead character wants to restore his fading theater to its former glory by producing the world's greatest singing competition. A similar preservation theme runs through the 1979 Muppet Movie (big show to save an old theater from being demolished) and the 1980 Blues Brothers, in which Jake (John Belushi) puts together his old band to help save the Catholic home where he and his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) were raised.  For a conservation theme, try The Descendants (2011):  the protagonist played by George Clooney struggles with whether to sell 25,000 acres of culturally important land amidst other family dramas.  Fixer-uppers can appreciate The Money Pit (1986). And we suggest any movie where a place is so palpable that it feels like a character: Squam Lake, New Hampshire in On Golden Pond, Savannah, Georgia in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and New York City in Woody Allen movies and more.  Send your favorites to projects@nhpreservation.org.
