History Alive Lecture and How-To Stencil Demonstration

CELEBRATE HILLSBOROUGH NEW HAMPSHIRE’S SESTERCENTENNIAL OR QUARTER MILENNIAL AUGUST 20, 2022 AT THE HISTORY ALIVE PROGRAM IN HILLSBOROUGH CENTER NH at 10 a.m.

On Saturday, August 20, 2022, the History Alive Program in Hillsborough Center, NH is hosting a lecture and how to stencil demonstration on 19th century New Hampshire paint decorated walls.

The PowerPoint lecture and demonstration on New Hampshire Wall Stenciling Featuring Moses Eaton at the Hillsborough Center will begin at 10 am. Linda Lefko, founding member and former President of The Center for the Preservation of Painted Walls (CPWP) will share her in-depth knowledge of New Hampshire’s 19th century paint decorated wall stenciling. Lefko will examine the importance of paint decorated walls in American Folk Art history and why they need to be preserved for future generations to enjoy! She will share examples of stenciled walls in existence as well as those which have been lost to fire, pillage or neglect. She will also discuss newly uncovered research on Moses Eaton, one of New Hampshire’s most prolific itinerant stencil artists. Attendees will learn how to recognize Easton’s work.

At 11 a.m. at the Jutzi Barn just across the street from the Center, learn Stencil Painting as if you were a professional wall painter. Noted stencil artist Polly Forcier will present a class for all who want to learn how to stencil a room using historical techniques. Forcier researched historical wall stenciling in the 1970s with Jessica Bond. The two traveled throughout Vermont documenting and tracing historic stencils; and Forcier began to decorate homes of friends and relatives with her growing stencil collection. As demand for her work increased, she launched MB Historic Décor in 1994 selling authentic stencils for home use. Now in its third generation of owners, visit MB Décor website at https://www.mbhistoricdecor.com. Forcier, who served on the Board of Advisors for CPWP, recently donated her extensive collection of historic stencils to the Archive of the organization. This ensures their existence for the future.

Immediately following at noon, Forcier will repeat the stencil class. To register for the lecture and classes, go to www.historyalivenh.org.
